Meet Munise
Born and raised in North London, my artistic journey began with a road trip that changed everything. When I was 12, my late father and mother took my brother and me on an unforgettable drive across Europe to Cyprus and Turkey. It was there—amid ancient walls and gilded manuscripts—that I first laid eyes on the art of Tezhip. I was mesmerised. The delicate floral motifs, the gold, the mysticism woven into every brushstroke—it imprinted itself deeply on my heart.
I pursued Art at GCSE and later a BTEC National Diploma, though at the time, my studies were grounded in modern art. It wasn’t until years later, after moving to Mid-Wales following my marriage, that I found myself called back to the traditional arts. During that period, I backpacked solo through the Far East—travelling across China, Malaysia, Indonesia, and along the Silk Route of Uzbekistan. I was in awe. From temple walls to hand-painted scrolls, I witnessed firsthand the reverence and intricacy of traditional art across cultures. It was in those sacred spaces and quiet moments abroad that I truly felt a sense of belonging.
Returning to the UK, I rekindled my love for the traditional arts. I began studying and practicing Tazhib (Islamic Illumination) and Persian Miniature Painting, drawing inspiration from the classical masters while adding my own sense of wonder and spiritual reflection.
In 2025, I moved with my husband and daughter to Sheffield, where I now run workshops at the Sheffield Millennium Gallery and Botanical Gardens. My sessions are rooted in ancient techniques but accessible to all, whether beginner or seasoned artist. I specialise in using natural pigments, handmade paints, and 24kt gold illumination, and I continue to deepen my connection to the mystical and spiritual aspects of the work.
I have two cats, endless sketchbooks of ideas, and a dream to one day travel the world collecting natural pigments to turn into soulful paintings. I’m always learning, always exploring, and forever grateful to be on this path.
